EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation)
The Compex® muscle stimulator is a powerful tool we use at Physio Fitness to support recovery, relieve pain, and rebuild strength — especially when injury, surgery, or long-term conditions have slowed you down.
Using precise electrical signals to trigger muscle contractions, Compex helps us wake up dormant muscles, accelerate rehabilitation, and boost recovery — all as part of your broader physio treatment.
There’s no extra charge. Just another smart tool in your therapist’s hands to help you heal better and move stronger.
What Is Compex Muscle Stimulation?
Compex is an advanced therapy system that uses electrical impulses to stimulate your nerves and muscles — mimicking the signals your brain normally sends to create movement.
It’s part of a category known as EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) and TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation). At Physio Fitness, we use it to support muscle activation, reduce pain, and improve strength during your recovery.
It’s safe, effective, and used across rehab, performance, and neurological care.
Compex is versatile — we use it for a wide range of recovery goals. It’s particularly valuable when your body isn’t yet able to fully contract muscles on its own — helping you rebuild strength safely and efficiently.
When We Use It
Because you’ll get more than just a massage.
We’re a physiotherapy-led clinic with a professional, athlete-informed environment. Our therapists don’t just follow routines — they understand what your body needs, and how to work with it safely and effectively.
- Qualified sports therapists
- Hands-on expertise — not fluffy or generic
- Honest advice if we think you’d benefit from treatment or rehab
- A premium clinic atmosphere, designed for results
This isn’t a relaxing spa treatment — and that’s exactly why it works.

How It Works (For Those Who Like the Detail)
Compex delivers targeted electrical impulses through small electrodes placed on your skin. These impulses stimulate the motor nerves that control your muscles — causing them to contract, just as they would if your brain had sent the signal.
Depending on the settings, we can:
- Activate b>slow-twitch fibres for endurance and postural strength
- Recruit fast-twitch fibres for power and speed
- Use TENS programs to relieve pain and interrupt discomfort signals
- Trigger muscle contractions to flush metabolic waste and promote recovery
This targeted stimulation helps retrain muscles, restore balance, and reduce compensations that may be slowing your recovery.
What Does It Feel Like?
Compex sessions are brief, effective, and completely safe.
- Electrodes are placed on your skin over specific muscles
- You’ll feel a pulsing or contracting sensation as the stimulation begins
- Your therapist can adjust intensity and programme based on your comfort and goals
- You might use it while seated, lying down, or even while actively moving
It’s not painful — just a firm, rhythmic contraction that quickly becomes familiar and manageable.
